The following short 'email thread' was the result of one of the many conversations on one of the many email lists I belong to. This information was submitted to me, to help extend to you, all possible variations of serial number prefixes/suffixes you just may find on a Spitfire or GT6. The information as supplied, is copied here in the form as it was sent to me by Mr. John Kipping himself.

Paul,
Many Spitfire and GT6 components were used on other models ie Toledo, Herald, 2000. Do you want to have another page for things like a DG gearbox or an FD diff.? I think I can remember it all.

Considering the diversification that exists in the variations of rebuilds... it might not be a bad idea to list any and every S# that might possibly fit in situ.

If you can/could, sure. Jot it down...and I'll tack it on the page. And of course...with proper credits where due   :-)

OK here we go:

Engine numbers
GA Herald 1200                         )
GB Herald 1200 Export               ) Similar to Spitfire FC engine
GD Herald  1200 50 BHP engine )

GE Herald 13/60    )
RD 1300 FWD       )  Similar to Spitfire FD/FE engine
RF 1300 FWD TC  )

GK Herald 13/60   )
DG Toledo 1300    )  Similar to Spitfire MK IV FH/FK engine
DH Dolomite 1300 )
FL Spitfire IV Sweden )

WB 1500 FWD                       )
YB 1500 FWD                        )
YC 1500 RWD/Dolomite 1500 )  Similar to Spitfire 1500 engine
DM Toledo 1500 (Export only) )
DS Toledo 1500 (Export only)  )
 FP Midget 1500                     )

Note 1: All 'Triumph' 1500 recon engines appear to have the DM prefix with a suffix ESS
Note 2: All 1500 blocks will take a 1300 (large bearing) crank, 1300 engines up to 1975 will not take a 1500 crank.

MB 2000 MK 1                        )
HB Vitesse 6                           )   Mk 1 narrow width heads, note crank/bearing/block change in 1966 as GT6 KC
HC (to 50000) Vitesse 2L Mk 1 )

HC Vitesse II            )
ME/ML 2000 MK II    ) These blocks interchangeable, as GT6 KD/KE/KF
CR/CP TR5/6            )
MG/MM/MN 2500      )

Gearbox numbers:
GB Herald 1200  )
GE Herald 13/60 ) Three synchro boxes, casings interchangeable, as Spitfire FC/FD
HB  Vitesse 6     )      6 cylinder gearset not interchangeable with 4 Cylinder

HC Vitesse 2L       )
DG Toledo             ) Four synchro 3 rail, casings interchangeable, as Spitfire FH & GT6
YC 1500 RWD       )   Vitesse/Dolomite/GT6 gearset not interchangeable with Spit/Toledo/1500 RWD
WH Dolomite 1850 )

DN Dolomite 1300  )
DR Dolomite 1500  )  Single rail boxes, casings interchangeable, as Spitfire FR/FT
YD 1500 RWD       )    Dolomite 1850/TR7 gearset similar to GT6, not interchangeable with Spitfire etc.
WM Dolomite 1850 )
CG TR7 4 Speed    )
Note 1: Marina boxes and Midget 1500 (?) boxes casings not numbered.
Note 2: Triumph use GR as a prefix number for reconditioned gearboxes for all models and it is therefore meaningless

Diffs:
GA Herald 1200  )
GE Herald 13/60 ) All these diffs are 4.11 ratio as Spitfire FC, but crownwheel carrier changed in 1967 and there
HB Vitesse 6      ) are three different types of quartershaft fitted. Basically parts not interchangeable with 4.11 below

FD Vitesse 2L Mk I ) These diffs are 3.89 as GT6 KD. Note although the front casing changed in 1971 (different
HC Vitesse 2l Mk II ) carrier and bearings fitted)  ratios available are 3.27, 3.63, 3.89, 4.11, 4.55

Crownwheel and pinions
3.27 used in: GT6 non overdrive, Dolomite 1850 auto, early TR7 auto, 1500 Spitfire Switzerland, Ital 2L
3.63 used in: Spit 1500 (not US), Dolomite 1850, TR7 early, Dolomite 1500 late, Marina 1800, Ital 1700
3.89 used in: GT6 overdrive, Spitfire 1500 US, Vitesse 2L, Toledo 1500, 1500 RWD, Dolomite 1500 early, Ital 1300
4.11 used in: Toledo 1300, Dolomite 1300, Marina 1300, Spitfire IV US 1972
4.55 used in: Marina Van early.

Note 1: Toledo/Marina/Dolomite/TR7 have a solid axle and the diff housing has no facility to bolt a front cross piece onto.
Note 2: Late crownwheel carriers fitted from 1977 will not fit into pre 1971 front housings.
Note 3: 3.27 carriers are unique, all others are interchangeable.
Note 4: Herald 948 (and Standard 8/10) have 4.55 and 4.875 ratios that use a unique carrier.

Finally, FWD (Front wheel drive) cars use a gearbox/diff under the engine.
2000/2500/Sprint/Stag/TR gearboxes not mentioned as they are not directly interchangeable

Whew
John Kipping

What can I say... we all thank you John.
