The Transmission, Clutch and Rear End
While working on the electrics, I
had to pull the transmission tunnel to get to the tranny mounted reverse light switch.
So of course while I was there I replaced the busted speedo cable. I also replaced
the bushes in the shift linkage to get rid of the slop in the shift lever. A new reverse
lockout adjustment bolt needed to be installed as well.
Considering how messy everything else was, to see such a clean tranny made me wonder what was up! I've since come to find the p.o. had already installed a rebuilt tranny and rear diff. I figured at this point I might as well check out the clutch. So the whole tranny was pulled out. While examining the clutch for wear, I found 'Borg and Beck' stamped right in the metal work. As nearly as I can tell, the pressure plate is brand new, showing nearly zero wear. While here, the clutch slave cylinder was rebuilt, to save me going it again anytime soon. (I rebuilt the clutch master cyl at the same time) Granted, at this place and time, the rear axles are still off the car and it's up on stands. but that didn't stop me from firing it up and testing out the synchros and gears. Without the load of the car on the drive line, I felt safe doing a few clutchless 'power shifts'. The synchros worked as they should, resulting in no 'chunking' and all gears were easy to find. U-joint free play in the driveshaft is not detectable, and they feel good and snug. The rear rubber tranny mounts feel new as well. A new wiring harness had to be built to fix the damaged (dried and cracked insulation) wires here going to the reverse switch. A spare wire harness really DOES come in handy to this type of stuff. :-) |
